Happy Easter

I’m back again 🙂 I had another special request for a birthday – this time it falls on Easter. Some friends of mine made their own custom invites for their daughter’s birthday that had a really great color palette. They sent me a digital copy of the images of the eggs on the invitation so I could try to match the colors.

Here are the images from the invitation:

And here is what I came up with:

Matching colors can always be a challenge, but I think I was pretty close on these. The darker the color, the harder it is to match without using too much coloring. One thing to always keep in mine when making royal icing is that the colors become richer and more vibrant after they sit for a while – at least a few hours, if not overnight. The navy blue originally looked more like a dark grayish-blue to me. But once I let it sit overnight, I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I have 2 more batches I need to get moving on this weekend. Shapes that I haven’t done before and one is actually to use as a fundraiser at my nephew’s school. Stay tuned!

Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I received a request to make some Shamrock cookies for a birthday party this week. I made some solid green ones last night and felt like they needed a little something extra. I needed something that was not going to take too long to dry because they needed to be ready the next day. Typically, if you use sanding sugar, it helps set the icing faster. I’m hoping they are happy with the results. I’m loving them! Happy Birthday to Lyon and Thank you to Stewart and Kristen for the order 🙂

Next up – Easter eggs! Doesn’t it feel strange to have these two holidays so close together? I am really loving the warm weather we have already here in NC. I can never get enough of the sun. Here’s to hope

Tyler’s Dirty 30

My friend (and one of the sweetest guys I know), Tyler, turns 30 this week. I was fortunate enough to celebrate with him, his beautiful wife Rachel, and a bunch of his friends in Asheville, NC over this past weekend. I have been dying to visit Asheville since I moved to North Carolina! What a great reason to finally go.

Rachel asked if I could make some cookies for the weekend, and of course I was happy to. Considering what I knew what we would be partaking in most of the weekend, here is what I came up with and the process from the beginning of the design to the finished product:

The cookies were a big hit 🙂  I’ve also gotten several orders in the past week, so look out for some more posts. I have a unique order I did around Christmas that I need to dig up the pictures for as well. Better late than never right?

I know it’s been several months since my last post – sorry about that. I bought my first home last September and I’ve been a little busy furnishing/decorating/painting – so so so many DIY projects. LOVING it! I may post some stuff on here about them just because I’ve become slightly obsessed.

So Much to be Thankful For

Cheers to my favorite holiday of the year!  What’s not to like?  Spending time with the ones we love while eating some ridiculously delicious food.  I have so much to be thankful for this past year – creating and maintaining laurenscookiejar.com is one of them!  I’ve had a passion for baking since I can remember, so creating this blog has been a lot of fun for me.

I made A LOT of Thanksgiving/Fall cookies this year.  I’m really flattered that my cookies will be on some tables (other than just my own) for this great holiday!!  I also made some for the Thanksgiving Potluck lunch at my office.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and are as fortunate as I am to be surrounded by your nearest and dearest!!!

Hilton Head Island Lighthouse

I was asked to recreate the lighthouse in Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island for a very special occasion.  I was flattered, and could definitely not say no.  I have visited this lighthouse countless times in my life, as HHI is not only my favorite vacation spot, but I also was fortunate enough to live there for a few years.

20131231_115748  I had to modify the cookies a bit once I cut them out of the dough because my lighthouse cookie cutter has a house on the bottom  Good idea to keep in mind that you can always alter the shape of your cookie if your cookie cutter doesn’t match exactly what you’re looking for.  Another example would be the diamond ring cookies.  My cookie cutter doesn’t have a hole in the  middle, so I used a separate circle cookie cutter to alter it.

Until next time…   🙂

Love is in the air

Happy Saturday everyone!

I got to try out my skills on some more diamond ring cookies, thanks to an order from my awesome friend, Andrea.  I have to say, these are some of my favorite ones to make.  I changed them up a little bit from the original batch I did in an earlier post.  I was able to find a small circle cookie cutter that fits perfectly inside the diamond ring cookie cutter.  So you’ll see that the ring itself is thinner this time – making the diamond stand out a little more.

New Year’s Eve

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!  I have been in Ohio visiting with my family for Christmas, but I still managed to whip up a batch (or 5) of cookies while I was here.

I just wanted to share a quick post of some cookies I made this weekend for New Year’s Eve.  I had a couple helpers this time – it was a lot of fun!  Thank you to Courtney and Megan (and of course my lil nephews Braden and Jack)!

Paddy O’Beers Grand Opening

If you like craft beer, fun times and great people – you all need to go downtown Raleigh and visit Paddy O’Beers on Fayetteville St.  They had their grand opening this weekend, so I got to try out some new cookies I’ve never done before.  I ordered beer mug and beer bottle cookie cutters last week.  The shamrock was already part of my collection.  I’m always excited to try out new shapes/designs, but there’s always a risk that they won’t turn out at all how I envision them.  Luckily, these came out just how I wanted them!

The beer bottles are an homage to my favorite beer, Trappistes Rochefort 10.  If you haven’t had it before, you’re missing out.  Of course, I couldn’t make an exact replica, I’m not THAT good, but I had to at least get the blue 10 in there!

Go visit the crew at Paddy O’Beers.  Have a Rochefort 10 – you won’t regret it!

I’ve got a lot of Thanksgiving cookies to make over these next few days, but if you have any ideas of anything to make between then and Christmas, please send them my way!

Congratulations Rachel & Tyler!!!

My super sweet, awesome, and fun-sized friend, Rachel got engaged last month to another one of my equally sweet, awesome, yet not so fun-sized friends, Tyler.  This was such exciting news!!!  We all met at work right here in Raleigh.  After a few years of being great friends, they finally realized that they were perfect for each other.  Seriously, how cute are these two?!Image

Of course I thought the perfect engagement gift would be some cookies 🙂  I’ve made some for Rachel before for her 30th birthday – I’ll have to post those later.  Those were some of my favorites!

These cookies are a little different because I used sprinkles this time.  I also had to improvise a bit and find a creative way to cut the circles out of the middle of the ring 🙂

I realized as I started these first few posts, that my most recent batches were for some of my closest friends – Tricia, Eileen, and Rachel.  Just wanted to thank all of you (and Tyler of course) for being such great friends and being so supportive with my baking and the new blog.  You guys are the best.  Love you all 🙂

As always, please feel free to reply to this post with any ideas for future batches/comments/questions.

Welcome Back Eileen!

One of my dearest friends here in Raleigh was out on maternity leave for the last couple of months.  As happy and excited as I was for her to welcome her adorable baby boy to the world, I missed her terribly at the office.  I wanted to make sure that she felt welcome and missed when she came back.  I know that she and her family have always been fans of my sugar cookies, so I thought, why not surprise her by leaving cookies on her desk for when she came back to work?

As you can (and will) see, I find all kinds of reasons and occasions to make cookies.  You wouldn’t believe all the different types of cookie cutters you can find out there!

As always, please feel free to reply to this post with any ideas for future batches/comments/questions.
