Happy Easter

I’m back again 🙂 I had another special request for a birthday – this time it falls on Easter. Some friends of mine made their own custom invites for their daughter’s birthday that had a really great color palette. They sent me a digital copy of the images of the eggs on the invitation so I could try to match the colors.

Here are the images from the invitation:

And here is what I came up with:

IMG_20160323_083643IMG_20160323_083710IMG_20160323_083700

Matching colors can always be a challenge, but I think I was pretty close on these. The darker the color, the harder it is to match without using too much coloring. One thing to always keep in mine when making royal icing is that the colors become richer and more vibrant after they sit for a while – at least a few hours, if not overnight. The navy blue originally looked more like a dark grayish-blue to me. But once I let it sit overnight, I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I have 2 more batches I need to get moving on this weekend. Shapes that I haven’t done before and one is actually to use as a fundraiser at my nephew’s school. Stay tuned!

Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I received a request to make some Shamrock cookies for a birthday party this week. I made some solid green ones last night and felt like they needed a little something extra. I needed something that was not going to take too long to dry because they needed to be ready the next day. Typically, if you use sanding sugar, it helps set the icing faster. I’m hoping they are happy with the results. I’m loving them! Happy Birthday to Lyon and Thank you to Stewart and Kristen for the order 🙂

Next up – Easter eggs! Doesn’t it feel strange to have these two holidays so close together? I am really loving the warm weather we have already here in NC. I can never get enough of the sun. Here’s to hope

Baby Boy Shower

I made some cookies for a baby shower that a friend of mine attended this past weekend. I’m really loving the color of these. This springtime weather we are having lately is very fitting for the pastel spring-like colors!

I hadn’t broken out my sailboat cookie cutter in probably 5+ years, so that was a fun one to make. The teddy bears are easily one of my all-time favorites. I made half the bears with the solid brown flood icing and the other half with different designs using all of the colors in the batch. I know some people don’t like a ton of icing on their cookies, and it’s also fun to play with different designs.

I’m really happy with how they turned out and it sounds like they were a hit at the party! Thank you, Jennifer! I am already working on my next couple of orders, so you will be seeing those soon. I will be making some for a St. Patty’s Day birthday and also some for Easter.

She Said Yes!!!

I know it’s been months since I posted last.  I don’t tend to bake a lot when it’s 90 degrees outside, but I’ve been itching to bet back in the habit lately.  And boy did I have a great reason to get back to it!

Another engagement between two amazing people, Andrea and Justin, who just happen to be great friends of mine!  Now that he has proposed, I can finally say that I was so excited to get to be a small part of proposal.  Justin is easily one of the most thoughtful guys I’ve ever met, and he cooked up quite a surprise weekend for Andrea in Asheville, NC.  I got a message from him that started like this…

So I hope you are able to keep a secret because I am going to let you in on a big one. I am getting ready to propose to Andrea. And I need a little help from you to set the stage….

I froze.  I work with Andrea and she sits pretty much right behind me.  I wasn’t sure if she was there or not when I was reading the message, but I also know I am horrible at containing emotion on any level and I was not about to ruin this surprise, so I just didn’t move until she left the building.  Which luckily was only 10 minutes later, ha!

The “little help” he needed was for me to delivery a surprise mystery package to her without her knowing where it came from.  It was a box filled with some hints for an upcoming weekend – including one saying she needed to pack a bag and request off October 10th from work.   I am a horrible liar yet somehow pulled off quite a show when she asked if I knew where the box came from that magically appeared on her desk.  Who me?  No, Andrea, I have no idea how that box magically appeared on your desk once you FINALLY left for a moment to run to the bathroom 😉  (Thank you to everyone on our side of the building that didn’t rat me out btw)  Now I just had to keep my mouth shut for 3 more weeks.  No. Big. Deal.  What?!

Their weekend was a great success and these two lovebirds are going to tie the knot!!!

Paddy O’Beers Grand Opening

If you like craft beer, fun times and great people – you all need to go downtown Raleigh and visit Paddy O’Beers on Fayetteville St.  They had their grand opening this weekend, so I got to try out some new cookies I’ve never done before.  I ordered beer mug and beer bottle cookie cutters last week.  The shamrock was already part of my collection.  I’m always excited to try out new shapes/designs, but there’s always a risk that they won’t turn out at all how I envision them.  Luckily, these came out just how I wanted them!

The beer bottles are an homage to my favorite beer, Trappistes Rochefort 10.  If you haven’t had it before, you’re missing out.  Of course, I couldn’t make an exact replica, I’m not THAT good, but I had to at least get the blue 10 in there!

Go visit the crew at Paddy O’Beers.  Have a Rochefort 10 – you won’t regret it!

I’ve got a lot of Thanksgiving cookies to make over these next few days, but if you have any ideas of anything to make between then and Christmas, please send them my way!

Welcome Back Eileen!

One of my dearest friends here in Raleigh was out on maternity leave for the last couple of months.  As happy and excited as I was for her to welcome her adorable baby boy to the world, I missed her terribly at the office.  I wanted to make sure that she felt welcome and missed when she came back.  I know that she and her family have always been fans of my sugar cookies, so I thought, why not surprise her by leaving cookies on her desk for when she came back to work?

As you can (and will) see, I find all kinds of reasons and occasions to make cookies.  You wouldn’t believe all the different types of cookie cutters you can find out there!

As always, please feel free to reply to this post with any ideas for future batches/comments/questions.

Tricia’s Wedding Cookies!

As it grew closer to my best friend’s wedding in October, I thought more and more about what I wanted to give her.  I knew I wanted to incorporate some custom cookies in her gift some how.  I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to do it, so I looked to her registry for some inspiration.   I went to Macy’s with my mom looking for something that might spark an idea.  I stumbled upon a cookie jar/tin that she registered for and I was SO excited!  The rest was easy.  I mean – I’m not going to give someone an empty cookie jar.  That would just be rude 😉

As I searched through the rest of the registry, I picked up a couple other things – one of which was a set of kitchen towels with rolling pins on them.  I decided to pick those up and use the colors in the towels as my color palette for icing.  I debated on shapes to make.  It was a Fall wedding – so do I do leaves?  Do I do a wedding theme?  Hearts?

I went with wedding cakes and hearts because I had never tackled the wedding cake cookie before and I was anxious to try it.  (Plus I can work the leaves into my Thanksgiving batches here shortly.)  I went with the double hearts as well – though it would be cute to personalize them with their initials.

— Side note:  I’m trying to be better about taking progressive shots along the process —

I filled up her cookie jar full of cookies, and I also made gift boxes for all of her girlfriends that came out to celebrate for dinner and drinks the weekend before the wedding on Hilton Head Island.  I found the semi-transparent plastic take-out boxes and iridescent paper at Michael’s  – simple custom party favor that everyone seemed to enjoy.  I was honored that Tricia used some of the cookies just a few days later at the rehearsal dinner.

I have a few more that I will posting soon.  I’ve been a busy baker lately!  I hope that keeping up this blog will inspire and motivate me to bake more often.   Please feel free to reply to any post with any ideas/comments/questions.
