Happy Easter

I’m back again ūüôā I had another special request for a birthday – this time it falls on Easter. Some friends of mine¬†made their own custom invites for their daughter’s birthday that had a really great color palette. They sent me a digital copy of the images of the eggs on the invitation so I could try to match the colors.

Here are the images from the invitation:

And here is what I came up with:

Matching colors can always be a challenge, but I think I was pretty close on these. The darker the color, the harder it is to match without using too much coloring. One thing to always keep in mine when making royal icing is that the colors become richer and more vibrant after they sit for a while – at least a few hours, if not overnight. The navy blue originally looked more like a dark grayish-blue to me. But once I let it sit overnight, I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I have 2 more batches I need to get moving on this weekend. Shapes that I haven’t done before and one is actually to use as a fundraiser at my nephew’s school. Stay tuned!

Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I received a request to make some Shamrock cookies for a birthday party this week. I made some solid green ones last night and felt like they needed a little something extra. I needed something that was not going to take too long to dry because they needed to be ready the next day. Typically, if you use sanding sugar, it helps set the icing faster. I’m hoping they are happy with the results. I’m loving them! Happy Birthday to Lyon and Thank you¬†to Stewart and Kristen for the order ūüôā

Next up – Easter eggs! Doesn’t it feel¬†strange to have these two holidays so close together? I am really loving the warm weather we have already here in NC. I can never get enough of the sun. Here’s to hope

Tyler’s Dirty 30

My friend (and one of the sweetest guys I know), Tyler, turns 30 this week. I was fortunate enough to celebrate with him, his beautiful wife Rachel, and a bunch of his friends in Asheville, NC over this past weekend. I have been dying to visit Asheville since I moved to North Carolina! What a great reason to finally go.

Rachel asked if I could make some cookies for the weekend, and of course I was happy to. Considering what I knew what we would be partaking in most of the weekend, here is what I came up with and the process from the beginning of the design to the finished product:

The cookies were a big hit ūüôā ¬†I’ve also gotten several orders in the past week, so look out for some more posts. I have a unique order I did around Christmas that I need to dig up the pictures for as well. Better late than never right?

I know it’s been several months since my last post – sorry about that. I bought my first home last September¬†and I’ve been a little busy furnishing/decorating/painting – so so so many DIY projects. LOVING¬†it! I may post some stuff on here about them just because I’ve become slightly obsessed.

Happy Halloween – Pumpkin Chunkin’ Style!

I work for Atlantic BT in Raleigh, NC. ¬†When we aren’t working hard building websites,¬†we organize¬†some pretty great cultural events.¬† One of my favorites¬†is the annual Pumpkin Chunkin’. ¬†We get all of our employees, their friends/families, and our clients together every year to eat great food, enjoy some delicious beverages, hang out, check out the creative pumpkin carvings from the employees¬†– and of course¬†then launch those¬†pumpkins from a giant trebuchet across the parking lot to see which one will fly the farthest. ¬†And even more entertaining – which one will barely make it out of the contraption. ¬†It’s always a good time, rain or shine, and luckily we were blessed with some great weather this year.

What great event is complete without some fun cookies?! ¬†I started my blog just about a year ago, but I didn’t make any Halloween cookies last year, so this is my first time posting them. ¬†I really had a good time with these.

I had fortunate enough to have some family members who are not only very supportive of my time consuming cookie habit, but they also like to help out ūüôā

The cookies were a hit at the party, and from what I gather, they seem to taste pretty good too.  Win-win!

My pumpkin carving didn’t win any awards this year, but I still think he’s cute enough to share here. ¬†I was inspired by my nephew, Jack. ¬†I sent a pic to my sister up in Ohio and Jack ran into school all excited to tell¬†his teacher that his LaLa made a Curios George pumpkin! ¬†I’ll take that over a trophy ūüôā

Happy Halloween everyone!

Sweet Summertime

Helloooooooo friends!

It’s been way too long! ¬†So you know that part on my About Me where I said I started this blog to motivate me to bake more often and stop being a workaholic? ¬†Well I haven’t been doing an awesome job of that lately, so I’m going to try to fix that. ¬†Luckily I’ve had a few people contact me recently with orders, so that will keep me going.

So this batch was thanks to my awesome friend, Andrea. ¬†She ordered them for a birthday of a friend of hers for this weekend. ¬†They are celebrating on Ocracoke Island! ¬†So she asked for beach themed cookies. I haven’t done anything like that in a few years, so I was pretty pumped. ¬†Plus she asked for really bright colors. ¬†So my canvases and color palette looked a lil like this…

ImageThen the fun began! ¬†I had never made palm trees, starfish, margherita glasses, or flip flops before. ¬†So I was pretty excited to get started. ¬†I nerded out big time. ¬†I put on Friday Night Lights on Netflix and a couple episodes later, I had these…

I even had a request the next day for some cookies for a client at work, so I made some more ūüôā

I hope these cookies make you smile ūüôā ¬†And I hope you all have fun plans for this Memorial Day weekend! ¬†Get out and enjoy the gorgeous weather!

Until next time…

Super Bowl Sunday

I may not be a huge football fan, but Super Bowl Sunday is great for so many other reasons. ¬†One of which is… the food! ¬†Appetizers and desserts – my favorites! ¬†I decided to whip up some football cookies for the occasion and I even threw in a new recipe I just tried for the first time last week. ¬†Salted caramel chocolate chip cookies. ¬†What?! ¬†I know. ¬†Yes, they’re amazing. ¬†Check out the¬†recipe.¬†Very easy to make. ¬†Little tip – do not over-bake. ¬†They may seem a little soft at 10 minutes, but they’ll be fine after they sit on the pan for a couple minutes out of the oven.

I’d also like to point out that, as you can, I finally got some new pans! ¬†Williams Sonoma GoldTouch¬ģ¬†Nonstick Cookie Sheets! ¬†I¬†love¬†them. ¬†They were a Christmas gift and they’ve made a big difference in my baking – everything cooks so evenly now. ¬†Nothing sticks to them. ¬†And they cool down so quickly. ¬†Highly recommend.

I hope everyone has a great Super Bowl Sunday! ¬†I can’t say that I care who wins, but I will be watching. ¬†And eating ūüôā

Until next time…

Can you match this bedding?

This batch will look a little familiar Рconsidering I used a picture of them as the background for this blog when it was originally launched.  I actually made these cookies a couple years ago, but they are still one of my favorite batches to date.  (I probably say that a lot.)  But these were rather unique.  A friend of mine approached me about making a custom batch of cookies for a baby shower she was attending for a coworker.

She sent me links to the bedding that the mom-to-be had registered for and asked if I could use the colors and at least one of the shapes in there as a guide.  Here are the pics I was given:

I knew the colors would be pretty easy to match, and narrowed the shapes down to the leaf, the owl, and the frog. ¬†I got really lucky and happened to find an owl cookie cutter that was very similar to the owl in the bedding. ¬†I have to be honest though, I didn’t have a lot of confidence that I’d be able to make them look like the owl on those sheets. ¬†Fingers were crossed big time on these…

Side note: ¬†I’ve learned a few random things since starting this blog and posting these pics:

  1. I desperately need new cookie sheets – mine are looking pretty sad
  2. My photography skills are lacking (but you get the point)

Like I was saying – I’m a horrible photographer, but this one makes me laugh so I had to post it. I love how every owl looks he’s looking in a different direction. Kinda creepy.

Special thanks to Lindsey for the order for these cookies!

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!  I will be working on Christmas cookies very soon, but I have some other ideas in the mix for this month as well.  Suggestions always welcome!
