Happy Easter

I’m back again 🙂 I had another special request for a birthday – this time it falls on Easter. Some friends of mine made their own custom invites for their daughter’s birthday that had a really great color palette. They sent me a digital copy of the images of the eggs on the invitation so I could try to match the colors.

Here are the images from the invitation:

And here is what I came up with:

IMG_20160323_083643IMG_20160323_083710IMG_20160323_083700

Matching colors can always be a challenge, but I think I was pretty close on these. The darker the color, the harder it is to match without using too much coloring. One thing to always keep in mine when making royal icing is that the colors become richer and more vibrant after they sit for a while – at least a few hours, if not overnight. The navy blue originally looked more like a dark grayish-blue to me. But once I let it sit overnight, I was very pleased with how it turned out.

I have 2 more batches I need to get moving on this weekend. Shapes that I haven’t done before and one is actually to use as a fundraiser at my nephew’s school. Stay tuned!

Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I received a request to make some Shamrock cookies for a birthday party this week. I made some solid green ones last night and felt like they needed a little something extra. I needed something that was not going to take too long to dry because they needed to be ready the next day. Typically, if you use sanding sugar, it helps set the icing faster. I’m hoping they are happy with the results. I’m loving them! Happy Birthday to Lyon and Thank you to Stewart and Kristen for the order 🙂

Next up – Easter eggs! Doesn’t it feel strange to have these two holidays so close together? I am really loving the warm weather we have already here in NC. I can never get enough of the sun. Here’s to hope

Baby Boy Shower

I made some cookies for a baby shower that a friend of mine attended this past weekend. I’m really loving the color of these. This springtime weather we are having lately is very fitting for the pastel spring-like colors!

I hadn’t broken out my sailboat cookie cutter in probably 5+ years, so that was a fun one to make. The teddy bears are easily one of my all-time favorites. I made half the bears with the solid brown flood icing and the other half with different designs using all of the colors in the batch. I know some people don’t like a ton of icing on their cookies, and it’s also fun to play with different designs.

I’m really happy with how they turned out and it sounds like they were a hit at the party! Thank you, Jennifer! I am already working on my next couple of orders, so you will be seeing those soon. I will be making some for a St. Patty’s Day birthday and also some for Easter.

Tyler’s Dirty 30

My friend (and one of the sweetest guys I know), Tyler, turns 30 this week. I was fortunate enough to celebrate with him, his beautiful wife Rachel, and a bunch of his friends in Asheville, NC over this past weekend. I have been dying to visit Asheville since I moved to North Carolina! What a great reason to finally go.

Rachel asked if I could make some cookies for the weekend, and of course I was happy to. Considering what I knew what we would be partaking in most of the weekend, here is what I came up with and the process from the beginning of the design to the finished product:

The cookies were a big hit 🙂  I’ve also gotten several orders in the past week, so look out for some more posts. I have a unique order I did around Christmas that I need to dig up the pictures for as well. Better late than never right?

I know it’s been several months since my last post – sorry about that. I bought my first home last September and I’ve been a little busy furnishing/decorating/painting – so so so many DIY projects. LOVING it! I may post some stuff on here about them just because I’ve become slightly obsessed.

Ohio Wedding

These cookies were made for a bridal shower/bachelorette weekend in Ohio for a wedding taking place on July 3rd. A dear friend of mine asked me to make cookie favor bags for the bride and her request was inspired by the last batch that I did for my brother’s wedding. So I was able to pull out the edible markers again and try something a little different out with those. We were originally going to use the bride and groom’s initials, but it looked a lot better when I wrote out their names instead. I added the wedding date at the bottom with the pink hearts to add a pop of color and match the other small cookie hearts in the bag. The wedding colors are blush pink and bright pink with touches of silver – so that’s where the silver diamond rings came in.

As I mentioned in my last post – it is very important to let the icing sit for several hours (ideally overnight) before writing with the edible markers to prevent bleed. I even left them under a ceiling fan overnight. Can’t be too cautious right? 🙂

Party like it’s 2015!!!

Happy New Year!

I wanted to put up a quick post of my latest batch – and first batch of 2015!  I was asked to make some cookies for a party to match the black/white/gold decor that also incorporated chevron and polka dot patterns.  It was a new challenge for me, which is always fun.  As much as I loved making all the Christmas cookies this season, I was ready to change things up a bit.

I decided to go with the gold sprinkles that I use for the diamond ring cookies.  I highly recommend these sprinkles over regular sanding sugar.

I’m really happy with how these turned out.  It’s not something I would have thought to try on my own, which is what has made this blog so great for me.  I’ve been able to share my creative outlet for those that are interested, and in return you have presented me with challenges and suggestions to try new ideas.

Until next time 🙂

So Much to be Thankful For

Cheers to my favorite holiday of the year!  What’s not to like?  Spending time with the ones we love while eating some ridiculously delicious food.  I have so much to be thankful for this past year – creating and maintaining laurenscookiejar.com is one of them!  I’ve had a passion for baking since I can remember, so creating this blog has been a lot of fun for me.

I made A LOT of Thanksgiving/Fall cookies this year.  I’m really flattered that my cookies will be on some tables (other than just my own) for this great holiday!!  I also made some for the Thanksgiving Potluck lunch at my office.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and are as fortunate as I am to be surrounded by your nearest and dearest!!!

Happy Halloween – Pumpkin Chunkin’ Style!

I work for Atlantic BT in Raleigh, NC.  When we aren’t working hard building websites, we organize some pretty great cultural events.  One of my favorites is the annual Pumpkin Chunkin’.  We get all of our employees, their friends/families, and our clients together every year to eat great food, enjoy some delicious beverages, hang out, check out the creative pumpkin carvings from the employees – and of course then launch those pumpkins from a giant trebuchet across the parking lot to see which one will fly the farthest.  And even more entertaining – which one will barely make it out of the contraption.  It’s always a good time, rain or shine, and luckily we were blessed with some great weather this year.

What great event is complete without some fun cookies?!  I started my blog just about a year ago, but I didn’t make any Halloween cookies last year, so this is my first time posting them.  I really had a good time with these.

I had fortunate enough to have some family members who are not only very supportive of my time consuming cookie habit, but they also like to help out 🙂

The cookies were a hit at the party, and from what I gather, they seem to taste pretty good too.  Win-win!

My pumpkin carving didn’t win any awards this year, but I still think he’s cute enough to share here.  I was inspired by my nephew, Jack.  I sent a pic to my sister up in Ohio and Jack ran into school all excited to tell his teacher that his LaLa made a Curios George pumpkin!  I’ll take that over a trophy 🙂

Happy Halloween everyone!

She Said Yes!!!

I know it’s been months since I posted last.  I don’t tend to bake a lot when it’s 90 degrees outside, but I’ve been itching to bet back in the habit lately.  And boy did I have a great reason to get back to it!

Another engagement between two amazing people, Andrea and Justin, who just happen to be great friends of mine!  Now that he has proposed, I can finally say that I was so excited to get to be a small part of proposal.  Justin is easily one of the most thoughtful guys I’ve ever met, and he cooked up quite a surprise weekend for Andrea in Asheville, NC.  I got a message from him that started like this…

So I hope you are able to keep a secret because I am going to let you in on a big one. I am getting ready to propose to Andrea. And I need a little help from you to set the stage….

I froze.  I work with Andrea and she sits pretty much right behind me.  I wasn’t sure if she was there or not when I was reading the message, but I also know I am horrible at containing emotion on any level and I was not about to ruin this surprise, so I just didn’t move until she left the building.  Which luckily was only 10 minutes later, ha!

The “little help” he needed was for me to delivery a surprise mystery package to her without her knowing where it came from.  It was a box filled with some hints for an upcoming weekend – including one saying she needed to pack a bag and request off October 10th from work.   I am a horrible liar yet somehow pulled off quite a show when she asked if I knew where the box came from that magically appeared on her desk.  Who me?  No, Andrea, I have no idea how that box magically appeared on your desk once you FINALLY left for a moment to run to the bathroom 😉  (Thank you to everyone on our side of the building that didn’t rat me out btw)  Now I just had to keep my mouth shut for 3 more weeks.  No. Big. Deal.  What?!

Their weekend was a great success and these two lovebirds are going to tie the knot!!!

She Sells Sea Shells

I was able to try out another new cookie cutter this week – the conch shell!  I had a sea shell cookie cutter, but hadn’t used it in a few years.  I was asked to make shell cookies for a rehearsal dinner for a beach-themed wedding and I wanted a couple of varieties of shapes.  Since I had never made the conch shells before, I wasn’t sure how I was going to decorate them, but it kind of evolved over a the course of a few days.  I kept adding a little more detail until I was happy with the way they looked.

So they started out like this…

ImageThen I decided to make them a lil different on the other side…

ImageBut it still felt like something was missing – so that’s where the rest of the detail came in.

I’ve made these sea shells before, but I forgot how much I like them 🙂  I was sticking to all pastel colors, and I tried to keep them in colors that would compliment each other since they were going to be packed in pairs and tied with navy blue ribbon.Image

I even threw in a few of the octopus cookies for fun 🙂  How cute is that lil guy all wrapped up?!

I know that’s a lot of pictures, but these cookies were a long process.  I really enjoyed making them.

I love love love summertime, so these summer-themed cookies are just the best!

Until next time…
